There are a thousand plus ways to start off on the topic of concealed carry. There are many experts, books, videos, blogs, forums, and opinions on the matter. So I decided to take the who, what, when, where and why approach. Heck this is the first post in this forum section, so I had to choose a starting point.... so here it is!
We had started a concealed carry thread here once upon a time ago, but during our overhaul of our forums....some things got lost. Well, we're starting over from scratch.
My name is John gauthier and I am the proud owner of On Target! I have been giving gun lessons since I was a teenager, showing my friends and younger family members how to be safe and shoot a gun. I continued doing so even after becoming a police officer (there were a few cops that needed extra help too). And continued doing so afterwards. I could never help myself while at the range. I'd notice someone in an odd satnce or shooting position, holding the gun wrong, or just completely ignoring the fundementals of marksmanship. It was my wife, Rachel's idea to do this professionally. I also customized and repaired guns on the side and she figured I could put it all together and make it all official with a licensed career move. We opened our shop just over a year ago and we're still going. It has been an uphill battle, but I feel that I do more for my community now than ever before. Helping others to keep themselves and their loved ones safe is a worthy cause in my eyes and I love to do it. Concealed Carry is the ultimate form of self protection (and protection for the community at large) and I hope to see more people getting their CCW Permits. The more of us there are out there, the more crime will drop. This is backed up by FBI data..... data that anti-gun elitists would rather didn't exist (the truth can render propoganda useless). People from all walks of life and background are not only buying guns, they are seeking concealed carry permits too! Some people see the need for concealed carry right away, but for some, it took a robbery or a close call to wake them up to the reality that they are vulnerable and that police cannot be everywhere at all times.
Concealed carry is available in many states now and in some it is easier to obtain than in others. No matter what your state allows for, you should always seek better training and more training opportunities. What I don't get are the people that think that the permit is the be all end all. They think that having the permit and having the gun on them is all that they need to stay safe. It is a very dangerous philosophy to live by. Anyone who is willing to carry a gun for the protection of their lives and others should seek out further training and should practice like....well.... like their lives depended on it. Louisiana requires that an applicant attend a state approved instructor's concealed carry course. An applicant gets a certificate of completion once he or she qualifies and then sends in their application to the state. As an instructor, I have the applicants for 9 to 10 hours and that is not enough for a first time beginner, nor should it be the end for those more experienced withshooting and firearms. The basic course is just that.... basic. Most instructor's will try to pack in as much as they can to better prepare their students, but the concealed carry course should not be the last thing that a person who gets his or her permit should attend. You should gravitate towards new skills and gun handling techniques. Learning is a constant endeavor. Seek and ye shall find!
Our social climate is generally a symptom of our economy. Good economical environment equals less crime.... and bad economic cycles (like what we are in) dip into new levels of high crime rates and statistics. We have lots of Americans without jobs while a porous southern border lets in more criminally disposed illegal aliens infect our economy with larger drains on the tax payer coffers than ever before. Jails are not holding criminals anymore. Without the budget to build new prisons or pay for the necessary guards, law-breakers are getting out more quickly.... and that's if they even go to prison at all. Law-abiding, decent people need the right to carry a firearm more now than ever before. Keep you eyes open and you will notice more and more grafitti popping up in your own neighborhoods. grafitti is the calling cards and territorial markings of gang activity. Stop signs, traffic signs, fences, the walls of buildings and even homes show the signs of the taggers and their gang affiliations.
At On Target we want to help people not only obtain their concealed carry permits, we want to help them take the next step in survivng the "What If" factor just in the case of a violent offender choosing them as a victim. Our LEVEL 1 course was designed to teach you the fundementals of gun handling. We use the combat triad to sink it all in. "Mindset, Marksmanship & Gun Handling"! Level One is a one day course that covers tactical pistol skills and drills while keeping the information grounded in a civilian friendly platform. All of this is to help prepare you for the day, if it comes, that you are forced into a deadly encounter and to better be able to survive it. No one can foresee the consequences of each decision we make. Whether the outcome is good or bad, we only envision the good outcome of any particular situation. Most people want to be trusting and believe the best of their fellow man. But, we must be prepared in advance for the days we may find ouselves in a less than desirable situation. Don't you want to do all that you can to make sure the odds are in your favor of survival? Mindset is the most important part of the Combat Triad. If you retain your calm and rational thinking processes in the face of danger, your odds of survivng are greatly increased. Training increases your confidence and helps to produce the proper mindset while under extreme stress. Not everyone reacts the same to a given situation, but the ones who seek advanced training and knowledge will react more positively in their defense.
I don;'t know if I covered all of the "W" topics but I think I have. Please feel free to give us your opinion. Be safe everyone!!!
