Federal Arms - H&K91 .308cal.

Okay, a lot of you have seen my newest fixer upper elsewhere in the forums, but now I'm starting a build up of it. First off, it is a FA-91 which is a H&K91 (or G3 if you prefer) clone by Federal Arms. I picked the gun up at the Gonzales, LA gunshow and bought it because I have been wanting a .308 battle rifle. It was definately needed to fill that hole in my personal collection. I figured we could project it out and use it to display our work. I'm also going to shoot the heck out of it. It did not come with the scope you see in the picture. That one is off of my AR-15 and I put it there for the picture. This thing is what I call ugly, or a diamond in the rough. The first thing I want to do is get rid of that crappy texture that is all over the receiver.

The first thing I did was pick up all my accessories and other do-dads for the gun at the gunshow. We were working the Kenner, gun show this past weekend and saw our good friend John Collins who owns BlackGunStuff.com! John is from Las Vegas and owns the very nice Beretta .40cal. we had just coated with the desert camo job (see our photo gallery for pics). We picked up the optics, riser, light, vertical grip/bi-pod combo and the aluminum picatinny foregrip.

The rifle is a Para-Trooper model with a short barrel and the quad-rail (it's not really a quad but we'll refer to it as such to make things a whole lot less complicated) was too long for the gun. So I cut off a little bit and shaped it to the receiver. The rail went on beautifully after modifying it. Next, I installed the riser and laser/scope combo plus added the light and vertical grip/bi-pod to the bottom of the accessory rail. All of this was mainly for test fitting and I'm going to try the optics and bi-pod set-up at the range on Thursday coming. In a little less than 2 weeks I'll take her out to shoot again with Kevin Davis and then it is off to cryo for some deep freeze time. Once the guns back from cryo, I'll start the overhaul and keep you all posted.

The quad rail (accessory rail) really does help to change the looks and functionality of this gun. The vertical grip/bi-pod combop will take a little getting used to due to it being a bit wide, but I think it has definate advantages. This gun is already barrel heavy, I couldn't imagine adding any more weight to the front.

I started to clean the .308 today after shooting it at the range and couldn't help myself from tearing it down and starting it's build up ahead of schedule. I'm not going to bother listing what I'm planning on doing to it now, because I'll probably change my mind when I get closer to going all the way.
I love this freakin' gun! I have heard some gun snobbery rank & file diss it on their forum sights of wanna be elites, but this gun in no way shape or form deserves critisism of that magnitude. I ran some milsurp euro trash Berdan primed NATO through it today and it didn't belch, fart or jam once. She just kept putting out and doing it in a badass way. Now..... why would I talk trash and put down a gun that operates that well and does so accurately. My one problem with it and I mean MY problem not the gun's..... is that I can't get used to the iron sights so easily. The little rotating back sight is not my cup of tea. I'll keep practicing and I know I'll improve with them. One of the optics I set up on it was easy squeezy trigger squezzy and dead on. but I figure that I should master the iron sights above all else.

It looks like a big mess now, but when she's finished, she'll look like a champ! I can't wait to finish it!

John...

You are not the only one who has commented about the drum rear sight and having to get used to it. Once you do I have been told that they are actually quick to bring onto target and quite easy to adjust. But again, that is after getting used to them.

I kinda figured that it would not take you very long to get into the guts of the FA-91. As a matter of fact I thought you would have been into her a lot sooner. I guess like any good lady it takes time to finally get under the hood for some serious work.  I would not worry much about what others say about this new acquisition to the "On Target Guns" armory. A lot gets said about those guns that do not cost the same as  a new SUV, so just finish the ladies face lift and show them what a real lady can be. I'll be waiting on the sidelines for the picture show until you are ready with the final center fold model to appear. That's when you can say "I told you so", and say it with pride.

Take care

Tye, I can't wait for you guys to see the vision I have for this gun. I have changed my mind about polishing out the receiver and going just FLAT black on everything else. Something about this gun just begs to be BLACK. So I'm going to LOVOC the handgrip and the buttstock in a liquid polymer finish, and give the metal a two tone black job. YEAHHHHhhhhhhh!!!! Classy black and all sinister Darth Vader. This gun will look like a much more high end gun than most would ever suspect. Even gun snobs will have to ask...."what is that? It looks great! Can I shoot it?"  With all the metal work and refining, the cryo, the coatings and accessories they'll be begging for it!!!! .........Oh yeah....... they will be..........!

How can I say this politely. Damn man you got me drooling like a dog waiting for steak from the dinner table.

I have to admit you have a way with words when you are describing a weapon you are working on. It sounds fantastic and I guess I will have to be one of those waiting in line to shoot her. Even if it is just one shot. "Darth Vader" huh???? You will end up fighting off all the Star War fanatics thinking it will shoot laser blasts self aimed and computer generated. But then again that is exactly what it is meant to do... right?

The dual tone black just sounds so perfect for a rifle like this. Now you have just made it that much harder to fall asleep. I will be thinking of how this will look and the gears will be turning to fast to sleep. One totally necessary to watch.

Take care,

I hope you get the chance to come down one day and shoot her too Tye. Plus, some of the other projects you've seen here and more! I'll tell you though, if you knew how many guns, and I'm talking really nice guns, that came through our hands here at On Target that we never even take a single picture of, you'd be pissed off. Earlier in the week we delivered a completed Saginaw (General Motors) WWll .30 cal. M1 Carbine. It was one of the nicest guns I've ever refinished (wood and all). We displayed it at the gun show and had the COLLECTORS drooling like rabid dogs. We heard offers that went over $1500. The customer was very pleased to hear all of this. It also made me feel a swell of pride in my work and that felt nice.... the feeling of having your work appreciated. The custom paid his bill and took the gun...... without me ever getting a pic. This happens lots of times and I have a few people around me that get mad because of it..... mainly my wife. The M1 would have made a great gun to put on the web, but so do all the rest of the ones I don't have pics of. Sometimes it is a time factor, but most of the time it is because I'm too busy to even think about it until it's too late.

John...

I would have loved to see pictures of the M1 carbine. I am somewhat of a nut when it comes to the little war babies. I have had numerous and kick myself in the ass every time I think about having to sell the ones I had. An all correct National Postal Meter, a complete Saginaw Gear, I still have my complete Inland but I also have an Inland receiver in 5.7mm Johnson, an Inland receiver in .45 Winchester Magnum and an Inland receiver in 9mm Winchester magnum. They are all great little shooters.

I can just imagine all the wonderful guns that pass through your shop and of course after the work you do with them they all need to be test fired after. That is a job I would give a lot to have. I can only hope that in time I might get the chance to visit one day to see the inner workings of "On Target Guns". That would be a dream come true. For now I will be content with just seeing the pictures you take and are able to post. I totally understand how busy you can be and how you can not get pictures of every gun you work on. There has to be a certain turn around time and you can't keep your customers waiting excessively long to get their weapons back. You also need to get paid for your services and to do that you have to give those wonderful weapons back. Wouldn't it be great to keep them all. I guess all I can say is keep on doing what you are doing because it sure seems like your doing it right!

Take care

IT IS ALIVEeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

Put it all together today and it looks awesome. I shall post the pictures as soon as I get back to the office. I took her home with me and have been showing her off!!!!!

The best thing about the overhaul is the fact that I smoothed out the ugly as textured (metal) receiver. I can't believe that Federal Arms thought a textured (bumpy and coarse) reveiver was a good idea. It looked like crap.

This is a shot of the receiver after it was completely stripped of the ugly texture that was cast into the surface. It has also been sandblasted at this point.

Close up of the sandblasted muzzle brake and front of barrel assembly.

The receiver coated with Graphite Black ceramic coating from NIC

Completed muzzle brake and barrel assembly coated in Graphite Black Ceramic in High Heat formula

The COMPLETED PROJECT. Everything was coated on this gun..... internally and externally and it has five different blacks used on it. The stock set was done with flat black LOVOC polymer. The aluminum fore-grip rail was coated with a custom mixed ceramic/moly black with a light layer just to darken it up. The trigger housing and controls were done with a ceramic/moly black REFLEX coating, and the receiver, barrel and charge handle tube were coated in Black Graphite ceramic by NIC. The internals were done with a ceramic/moly REFLEX mix we do here.
Excuse the excess gun oil on the trigger housing, we do oil 'em up pretty good for reassembly and wipe them down later.

SMOOTH as a baby's bottom!

My new favorite gun!

I'll have to coat one of the gun's magazines for display purposes, but I am going to be getting in some steel 20 rounders and some 30 round mads too. I'll coat them all up when we get them in. I do have a few more things to do to the gun, but I can never say that I'll ever be finished it because I am always wanting to add or change something. I'm going to get into the sling and mount options later and I will be mounting the flashlight back on it. So that means there will be more pics of this gun to come..... and you thought this was the end of PROJECT: VADER!!! You big sillies. Stay tuned for more evil black gun action!

I have to admit that it does look like one hell of a nice looking rifle. Almost too nice to shoot but I doubt that it will go that far. Ya' done good. Real good. You can be sure you have a lot of folks drooling over this one. Just wait for the next show when you have others want to take her home with them and you tell them they can't. You will end up breaking hearts left and right.

I just ordered 5 steel mags to go with the 6 aluminum ones I have. I'll coat them up in time for the next gun show. I also have a green side mount laser for it too. One fore the Ar-15 and one for the FA-91. I can't wait to have the Ar-15, the Ak-47, the SKS and the FA-91 on display next to one another. Oh, boy oh boy...... I got a new rifle today and I can't wait to tear into it and give her heavy doses of steroids. What it is and what caliber shall remain secret for the moment. But I will say it's BIG BORE BOLT ACTION FIVE SHOT CUSTOM BUILT PSYCHOTICNESS!!!
Pictures of the AK-47, the AR-15, the SKS and the new rifle shall hit the gun gallery forum section as well as the On Target photo gallery sooer than you think!

Damn, with 11 magazines I am sure you will be ready for just about anything. Even so, you can never have enough ammunition or magazines to put the ammo in. It sounds as if you will have the FA-91 totally stacked and packed and side by side with all your other so called "Black Rifles". Now you are just going to have to remember to take pictures of your display at the gun show. Now I am going to wonder if you are given a chance to sell the FA-91 at the show will you do it or has the FA-91 earned a permanent spot in your gun safe? I have not seen any pictures of your SKS and I can't wait to see pictures of your SKS and your AK.

I should send you my Calico to work on so you can display it. I have a feeling it will draw quite a bit of interest.

The Calico would get tons of attention and would also have a lot of OFFERS. I would put it next to my MAC-10 in .45 acp! The Mac is a soon to started project for display.

I just got my 5 steel mags in today. They are heavy duty. I'm going to order 5-7 more soon. I'm going to coat these five up so they match the gun with tight and fresh NEW looks. They gotta go to cryo too. The steel mags are built as beefy as the gun is. I'm very happy with the purchase. How the heck could I beat it though......
Five 20 round STEEL mags for $1.97 EACH!

Yes you heard me right!

$1.97 EACH

For steel mags made in Germany by H&K
Three of them look new and never used. The other two have minor signs of wear on the finish and that's it. The polished steel followers all look new. I'm veru impressed by what I got for under $10

If any of them have a problem with running in my gun (I don't see that happening though) Cheaper Than dirt will exchange them for me.

I will coat them up and have the gun and the mags propped up for a family pic. I'll also have my tactical flashlight mounted on her again, plus I'll be installing some flush mount rail covers done up in a dark gray.....Oooohhhh Hot Tamale!

It looks like I am going to have to think about sending the Calico down to you. If I do decide to sell it I could always send it to you for the Cryo and refinish and sell on consignment. You could always take out the cost of the Cryo and refinishing out of the sales price. Let me think that over.

You got one hell of a deal on the magazines. And to be able to send them back if they don't work is even better. That sounds like a win win for you. But I would check the mags function before you refinish them. That FA-91 is going to be one ass kicking rifle when you get her done. With the green laser and flash light I bet it will be hard to keep peoples hands off it.

I can't wait to get the darned thing back from cryo. I will install all of the goodies as soon as I get it in my hands.
We did have to start a "no touching" policy on some of our display guns. It's  a shame to do so, but we have already had one gun dropped on a concrete floor at our local gun show. Lucky for us there was no damage, not even a scratch. We were all impressed with the new finish. Plus, we get some rough people who do not know how to respect other people's property. They sometimes place a gun on top of another gun and bang them into one another. It can make you get short with people fast. We do allow people who are kind enough to ask, to handle the guns with us right there.
On the whole, our gun show experiences with the general public are very pleasant and we enjoy meeting so many nice people. Now I need a flashlight for my AR-15!!!
